I Didn’t Study Illustration
This month is National Share a Story Month, so I thought it would be nice to share something about me and that is (and may surprise you) that I never actually studied illustration as a degree.
Everything I’ve made today has really been made through my own creative learning and endeavours. I did however study graphic communication at Cardiff School of Art in my early 20’s. There was actually an illustrative option but I chose to specialise in typography as that was my creative path back then. That degree turned into a nearly 20 year career as a graphic designer and somewhere along the way I got excited by illustration.
I’ve always been drawing since I was a boy so it felt nice to explore an old favourite outside my usual 9-5 design role. No matter the discipline, as an artist or whatever my main goal is to tell a story or idea through playful and thoughtful creative. Illustration has 100% given me a strong outlet to do that for myself and through commissioned work.
There’s no moral to the story, ha, but I would say for one it’s fun to deviate from your original creative path, to grow as a creative and see where it might take you.
Thanks for reading!
